'Notify Me When New Comments Are Added' is Broken

Alex at ScarletVirago.BlogSpot.com has recently brought a bug to my attention that impacts each user of this site.  When you comment, do you check the 'Notify me when new comments are added' checkbox?  If so, have you been getting emails from my blog when new comments are added?

Have you noticed this working before, and then stop working?  If so, do you recall the date (about) that it stopped working?

I'm currently trying to fix this issue, however, it's deep in the guts of my BlogEngine code.  I myself have never used it, and after a little test, I realize that it isn't working as well.

This has been added to my ever growing list of things to do.  Let me know if you have any info on this you can lend me.  Also, if you comment on this post, please check the 'Notify Me' checkbox to help me test.  This post will serve as my test post for getting this corrected.

Thanks all for having patience on this, I know this functionality really helps others keep up with posts they find interesting, and I surely want you to be able to get comments as they happen.

Thank you Alex for calling my attention to this!

I tried that once on another blog and the only thing that got emailed to me was my own comment. I don't bother with it any more. If the topic is good I'll stop back and check the comments and add more fuel to the fire. Heck I'm lucky if I check my email once a week.

I can't say for sure how often I select the Notify Me option but I do from time to time depending on the subject and the nature of my comment. The last notification I received was on a post you made on June 26. I got all the notifications on the comments on that post except the very last comment that was made by you on the same date.

I have noticed that I don't get the 'Thank You' for commenting email, but wasn't sure whether that was because I was a frequent commenter or not.

So here is the test. I've selected Notify.

(WooHoo! I may get two comments out of this to help keep me in the top 10, lol.)

I have checked the notify me when new comments are added to a couple of your recent posts (since your server died and was reborn), but have not recieved any further responses to those blogs. I guess I am more all over the blog roll list I have going which alerts me when a new post has been added, which I thn go check and also catch up on comments on the earlier posts. I also am checking the "Notify me" box below. Good luck in resolving the snafu.

I don't mean to distract you from your current problem resolution, but when ya have time would like to hear your comments regarding Pay pal donation buttons, versus scratchback "tips jar".

@Demeur - I do the same thing, but one nice thing about that checkbox on some sites is that you get the comment in the email too, so you can then tell if you want to visit the post again. In some cases, it will save some time for ya.

@BakerWatson - The Thank You email goes out one time only, the first time you comment. I've been meaning to change the text in that email, so you may get it again someday, but then too, it will be just once. Hopefully. Smile And feel free to tell me your experiences if you test with this one. You are helping me too!

@Gary - That's a great way to keep up huh! Thanks for mentioning that since I did not even consider that. People do things in such extraordinary ways sometimes, especially when it comes to blogging and keeping the ball rolling.

As for Scratchback vs. Paypal, Scratchback works through PayPal, so it MAY be cheaper (meaning less money extracted from deposits) to just use PayPal. However, you don't get the functionality that Scratchback provides either. This is the first I've seen Scratchback, and for those that don't know, its a way for your visitors to tip the blogger. It's an intriguing set up, I think I'll need to look at harder at it. This would make a great post! Thanks Gary, I don't need to think as hard today!

This email thing isn't working for me either, however, when you guys comment, I get that email. Sigh...issues, always issues. Smile

I don't always use it, but I haven't had any trouble with it before. I typically only use when a particular comment section is very interesting to me, otherwise I usually skip it!

Scratchback and tip jar...I'm looking forward to learning more as well. I have never used them but have thought about it. I had thought about putting a buy me a slaw dog button(instead of by me a beer) on my restaurant review site, but have yet to do it. Thanks for the request Gary.

Thanks all for helping me test it. Apparently, this isn't working. I've identified where the failure may be happening, so now it's just a matter of debugging it. Soon, I'll be on to my next issue! yay. Smile

I hear your "thank you" but I still feel kind of guilty for causing you a lot of extra work. I hope everybody uses the button now, considering your effort!

@alex - Bugs are bugs, and sometimes it takes the users to point them out to the site admins. That's just how it goes, so you shouldn't feel guilty at all. In fact, I'm very glad you brought that up. If you hadn't, I may have known about it! I think you deserve a cookie! Smile

It's well worth the trouble to fix too, since there are some that will use that to come back and comment a second time. It helps with the community aspect of the blog.
